Hi I'm Gregg Karr.
Presently you can find me in the accessories department. I started working at Guitar Center in 2002. Though I am a guitarist, I had a good knowledge of mixers and recording, both on tape and with DAW's , so they put me in Pro Audio. I worked there most of my ten years at Guitar Center, and was Department Manager for two years. I worked in the guitar department for a couple years, One year as Department Manager.
February 9 1964 I saw The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show. I thought to myself, "This looks like a good job to have". Years later I found out that John Lennon said the same thing when he was watching Elvis. I didn't actually start playing guitar until 1968, but I did start playing with tape recorders around 1965. I took guitar lessons for three years until my teacher told me I'd have to play along with records to learn what I wanted to know. He taught me to read music and music theory, as well as a bunch of jazz chords and standards. I started my first band when I was fourteen, and by the time I was sixteen I was already playing in nightclubs using a fake ID to get in. We all had to join the musicians Union to play the clubs in the Chicago area. I did that for a few years, also teaching guitar lessons at a local music store. I moved to California in 1976 with my drummer & bass player, found a singer and played clubs in the LA area. In the 80's we started writing our own material, and went through different musicians, and then I went on to other bands. I also did some work as a studio musician for other people. We played Hollywood up through the big hair era. In 1992 I got some recording gear and put together a home studio and learned how that worked. Before that, I was in studios only as a guitar player. I started a family and worked as a satellite TV tech and a burglar alarm tech until coming to Guitar Center in 2002.
I really enjoy when I see someone just starting out on guitar and get to watch them grow over the years into an accomplished musician. I have customers that have been shopping with me the full ten years I’ve been here. My goal is to always try to get them the best gear at the best price. I love working here helping people make music. Working at Guitar Center gives me the chance to listen to all the best players in our area. I like to think each day I help make the world a little louder.
My favorite strings are the
Cleartones because they last longer and sound great.
