Gil began playing music over 50 years ago, and kept up such education throughout grammar school and into college. He joined rock and blues groups as a teenager, and booked tours with groups from eighteen years of age well into his twenties. Eventually, he found himself in Sacramento, working various gigs with tribute bands and cover bands until he discovered Latin jazz and salsa groups that he attained persistent work with for about 30 years. As a result, he developed skills with the string bass, and perfected his ability to pick up sheet music and execute it at a performance straight away.
