I hold a Bachelor of Science in Music from the University of Evansville, IN (1985). I have taught private piano and voice lessons independently for 35+ years. My methods have changed over time. For example, I now teach students how to read music by pattern as opposed to the acronym Every Good Boy Does Fine or FACE. Although it can help learn the note names fast initially, if you forget which clef spells FACE, you've lost all the letters. Also, I think reading by patterns, known as intervals, especially in the upper grades, can eventually help one to learn the notes for new sheet music faster. However, each student as their own way of learning, my job is to adapt to the student's learning style. Many of my piano students participate in the optional Keyboard Education of Youth (KEY) competition. Several of my students were recently chosen to perform in an Honors Recital and received trophies. Others consistently earn Superior ratings in the Federation of Music Clubs, now known as the Indiana Arts Festival. My voice students learn how to breathe correctly. Ask the average beginner to take a deep breath at their first lesson. One invariably hears a loud, tense breath. Deep breathing gives one carrying power, also known as projection. We also work on pronouncing words correctly, interpretation, and singing in tune. Some students struggle with this because their breathing is too shallow. Others need to develop an understanding of pitch relationships. I enjoy teaching solfege, Do Re Mi, as in the Sound of Music. It is important to me to understand each student's goals and develop a plan accordingly. All students, whether piano or vocal, receive a thorough music background in music including theory, ear training, interpretation, musicianship, performance etiquette, and musicianship, such as loud and soft contrast.

I began taking private lessons at age 13; worked through the Musicians Institute curriculum for guitar studies. Studied Music theory and music recording in college and earned a duel associates degree in those areas. Spent many years playing music and empowering students to maximize their potential. Focus much of my personal studies on jazz theory and progressive rock and metal guitar.

I began playing guitar in 1989 and learned from taking lessons myself. I attended Vincennes University and took music class while a student there. After graduating, I started teaching lessons in 1996 at a music store and part-time at Vincennes University. Over the years, I have taught many students from different age groups on electric guitar, acoustic guitar, bass guitar, ukulele and even some mandolin. I have taught many different styles of guitar playing within many different genres of music.
