Born in Indianapolis, Indiana and raised in Los Angeles from the age of 5, he came from a family of music lovers and performers; it seemed like a foregone conclusion he would be a musician in some capacity. With a background in Appalachian folk and Country music from his mother's family in Eastern Kentucky, Ben was able to perform songs and analyze, before he could even read, often drawing pictures of the way the music made him feel. From there, he played saxophone in the school band, sang in school and church choirs, and performed in various musicals until he learned how to play his first love, the guitar. He began with fingerpicked, acoustic guitar before switching to electric guitar. After leaving high school, he taught himself various instruments, including bass and drums and pursued various kinds of musical education, including history, performance, composition, arranging, and engineering. His goal is to one day be a professional composer of classical and jazz music, but his new found love of teaching will probably remain with him the rest of his life.
