    Melissa Jean Filanc considers herself to be a lifelong student of music. She started tinkering on the piano as a small child, and picked up the guitar and bass guitar in high school. She was in various punk and metal bands during that time, and eventually joined a church band as a young adult. During her time in the church she studied bass guitar, drums, and piano with world-class professionals for roughly eight years. She started doing musical theater in her mid-twenties and studied voice and theatre with various companies for five years. After taking some time off to have a child, she decided to go back to college to attain her Bachelors Degree in Vocal Performance, which she is currently working on. However, she has her sights on a PhD of some kind.

    I began playing guitar when I was 15 years old and it became an obsession. It wasn’t long before I began forming my own group and crafting original music. After high school I attended Portland State University in Oregon, where I studied music theory, and eventually went on to study guitar performance at Musicians Institute in Hollywood. During these years I played in various bands, of various rock music formats, released many albums, and toured briefly. I’m currently the chief songwriter/guitarist/vocalist in Alizarin, a progressive rock/metal group. As an instructor, I teach mostly rock, blues, and classical music, and I am very comfortable teaching all skill levels and age ranges.
