Happy new day everyone. My name is JC Boyd and I live in Portage Michigan and teach at the amazing Guitar Center on Westnedge Ave. I have students in Voice (singing better), Guitar, Piano, and I’ve also had a few Bass students. I studied Voice at Musicians Institute in Hollywood, CA and at Western Michigan University. At WMU I rounded myself with Piano and Theory studies. Singing in front of people is something that I’ve been doing since the late 1970’s; a little theatre and a great deal of church singing. The other instruments came along slowly to support the voice, and I was able to start teaching in the middle of the 90’s. I enjoy all kinds of music, but have a thing for 70’s pop and all things Prog. I’m not sure it’s ok to put The Partridge Family, Kansas, and Chicago in the same sentence, but they make me happy. I remember my first guitar song. It was Mary’s Boy Child, and I had to go to an older friend to learn how to transpose. Teaching and playing In front of people are both lifegiving for me. Seeing a face with a genuine look of being moved by my singing is Fetch. Seeing the face of a student that just played an F chord for the first time or nailed that high note with power is also Fetch.

I am from Lima, Peru, and I currently reside in Kalamazoo, Michigan. My first contact with the guitar was when I was 14 years old, when my parents bought me my first acoustic guitar for my birthday. At the time, I didn't know of anyone who could really teach me to play the guitar, but luckily, with the internet, I was able to learn quickly. When I was 15, my parents gave me an electric guitar. From that moment, I fell in love with the electric guitar and realized that I wanted to study music and dedicate myself to this profession. After high school, I played in various local bands in my country. I was able to participate in many amateur and professional recordings, where I played a variety of styles from pop rock to hard rock, heavy metal, grunge and alternative rock. Soon after, I had the opportunity to formally study at a music institute in Surco, Peru, called Master Music. After finishing my studies, I met my wife, who is also a musician, and in 2018 we moved to Cusco, the most touristic city in Peru. We work there offering yoga classes with live music, and playing in different bars and hotels in the city. A month before we moved to the US, I was able to record my first professional single. Now I have almost three years of experience teaching guitar, bass, ukulele and piano in the United States. I specialize in rock, metal, pop, classical, grunge, trap, shred, guitar technique, music composition, and music theory. I teach children, teens, and adults, both in person and online, in Michigan and surrounding states. Currently my work is focused on music production (recording, mixing and mastering) and live concerts. My favorite phrase for music is "practice is the key to everything."

An alumnus of WMU’s School of Music, Marcus studied voice as a primary, guitar and piano as secondary, and is self-taught on both the drums and bass. He often does solo performances using a variety of instruments and live loops to accompany himself. Marcus’s skills are advantageous to students that are not only interested in learning an instrument, but also want to improve their singing voice. His teaching style is also suitable for students that are uncertain about picking their first instrument. Drawing upon his extensive knowledge on music theory, students will be capable of switching their primary instrument with ease.

Hi, I’m Jess! I’ve been playing guitar since the age of 10, and music has been my biggest passion ever since. I studied classical guitar at Eastern Michigan University and cut my teeth touring with a punk band. I’ve taught private lessons for about eight years and worked for a music school in the Detroit area for two years. My specialty is songwriting, and I have a strong background in music theory as well. I also have a pretty good knowledge of music production. I enjoy working with both kids and grown-ups! My biggest influences musically are John Frusciante, the Wilson sisters from Heart, and Taylor Swift. I also (not so) secretly love Bon Jovi!

This is where it starts. You’ll learn how to set up your drum-set ergonomically, hold your drumsticks properly, and play your first beats. I fell in love with drums & percussion immediately after my first encounter with them. I realized very quickly that I wanted to study music and dedicate myself to this profession. During middle school and high school, I played in various local bands. I have played on many amateur and professional recordings, where I’ve played a variety of styles from rock to orchestral. I have 20 years of experience teaching drums & percussion. I specialize in all varieties of rock and rock sub-genres, jazz, funk, classical and marching percussion, professional drum tech, music arrangement, and music theory. I teach children, teens, and adults, from beginner and intermediate, to pro level students. My favorite phrase for music is "practice is the key to everything." My courses are designed to hone in on specific topics during every lesson with step-by-step guidance and accountability, starting with the basics and working up to an advanced skillset.
