Born in Barquisimeto, Venezuela to U.S. citizen parents (father Cuban-American; mother American), Gustavo discovered his passion for music in early childhood. Gus’ first interest was in classical music, where he learned the timeless fundamentals of music. Following graduation from Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts in West Palm Beach, FL, Gustavo was awarded a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music
in Boston where he focused on World Percussion. During his studies atBerklee, Gus Co-Produced and Co-Directed the Opening Ceremony for the Berklee College of Music World Percussion Conference 2000; and was a Finalist in the Theolonious Monk Hand Drum Competition in Washington, D.C., which was attended by the U.S. Secretary of State and many notables from the world of music.

Gustavo has performed in regional Jazz festivals, including the San Jose Jazz Festival, the Stanford Jazz Workshop and the 19th Annual International Jazz Festival in Havana, Cuba.  Concerts and club dates include performances with notables such as Karmina, Insight, Danilo Perez, Giovanni Hidalgo, Horacio Hernandez, Dave Valentin, Andy Gonzalez, Jimmy Branly, and Tomasito Cruz, among others.  Gus taught Latin Percussion Workshops as an Adjunct Instructor at Palm Beach Atlantic College in West Palm Beach, FL.

Gustavo records and performs with bands throughout South Florida, which range from Salsa and Latin Jazz bands to Hip-Hop groups.  He launched his own band, “Gustavo & Friends” to surround himself with long term friends who share his musical philosophy.  Gus reserves some of his free time to write and arrange his own music as he compiles work for his CD. As a Sales Associate, he willingly shares his varied knowledge and experience to help his customers at the Guitar Center to improve their musicianship; equip their studio; and to make the right purchase of instruments and gear for their unique musical needs.  Gustavo is also available to perform in your next recording.
